Standard Mental Health First Aid Course – Busselton

The Busselton Dunsborough Alliance Against Depression is hosting a FREE 2-day Standard Mental Health First aid course on 17th and 24th August for community stakeholders generously funded by the  WA Primary Health Allaince. We would be grateful if you could share through your networks, please.

This 2 – day course teaches adults how to provide initial support to a person who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis:  The Mental Health First Aid is given until the appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

The course covers developing mental health problems and mental health crises as below.

Developing Mental health Problems

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental health crises including:-

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use

By the end of the course participants will feel confident  to understand the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, where and how to get help and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. They will have improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their interventions, knowledge of appropriate mental health first aid strategies, and confidence in providing mental health first aid to individuals with a mental health problem.
